PLAYCE Pompey is a colourful activity area, designed to encourage movement. Based on a pioneering scientific model for movement developed in the Netherlands, PLAYCE was built to be accessible for people of all ages and skill levels, including disabled people. 

 

There are no separate play areas for different groups; instead, PLAYCE provides an integrated activity space for all. This project has resulted in a huge increase in physical activity in an area where people’s life expectancy is significantly lower than the national average. It has also contributed to a notable reduction in anti-social behaviour.

 

Community consultation was central to the design process, with local residents playing a key role in shaping the space at every stage of its development by providing input on the design and functionalities they wanted to see. 

 

PLAYCE has transformed this once-unloved site into a vibrant, inclusive hub. The initiative has empowered residents, strengthened community ties, and improved quality of life in one of Portsmouth’s most deprived areas.
