Brooke Thomas – The Barnet Group
Sponsored by:
In November 2024, Brooke Thomas won the Learning for Good Work Award at the Mayor of London Adult Learning Awards – a well-earned recognition of her success, born of determination and resilience.
Brooke’s journey began with a housing and property management apprenticeship at Barnet Homes, where her talent for practical work was quickly recognised. Despite Brooke having no experience in either plumbing or gas, she began her Level 3 gas engineering apprenticeship.
Brooke has both ADHD and dyslexia, which affect how she learns and processes information. The course also meant she had to face and overcome her long-standing nemesis: maths, a subject she struggled with at school.
However, she was set on succeeding – and with hard work and determination, that’s what she did. Brooke now shares her experience with new apprentices, particularly women and neurodivergent learners, offering support, insight and encouragement. She is a passionate advocate for women in construction and a valued colleague, known for her technical skill and her kind, thoughtful interactions with residents.
The judges said:
“Brooke is very impressive; a trailblazing young woman in a traditionally male space, where she continues to thrive. An inspiration to other women and apprentices generally”
